Mentoring Support and Programs
Student Mentoring
Student Mentoring represents a excellent opportunity to provide a program which will benefit senior and new students, the school and the University, with relatively modest resources.
The PowerPoint slides linked to this file derive from the Mentoring Forum (August 2007). These guidelines may help you introduce or improve a mentoring program in your school.
Mentoring Guidelines (106 kB)
Mentor programs were introduced on a wide scale in Semester One 2008 on a model developed by the School of Nursing and Midwifery in 2007. The evaluation report of the Semester One 2008 program indicates that it has been a very successful intervention that has:
- improved the beginning experience of new students
- provided a great professional development experience to current students, and
- improved the sense of community and identity with participating schools (see report)
It is intended to gradually extend the number of mentor programs to other schools of the University. Schools interested in introducing mentor programs are invited to make contact with the START Manager.
Guidelines for Good Practice in Mentoring programs (DOC or PDF) have been developed from evaluation of the program. These guidelines will be of use to staff who are coordinating the mentors in their schools.
Staff may also find the evaluation report (327 kB) from the School of Nursing and Midwifery to be useful.
Information for students on mentor programs may be found here.
Curtin's student mentor programs comply with the standards endorsed by the Australian and New Zealand Student Services Association and those provided by the Youth Mentoring Network.
